Chris was in town from Virginia and wanted to get out to do some kayak fishing in Tampa Bay while he was here. We had an approaching full moon and great tides to do some evening and night time fishing from the kayaks. We launched our kayaks into Tampa Bay near St. Petersburg and headed to some shallow grass flats to look for redfish. Once the tide bottomed out and began coming in we found a school of redfish right where I expected them to be aggressively tailing and feeding on the shallow flats. Sight casting to tailing redfish is one of the most exciting fishing opportunities for kayak anglers in Tampa Bay. It didn’t take long for Chris to start hooking up on over slot redfish out of the school on Slayer Inc Lure’s Venice Glo colored Sinister Swim Tail (SST).

After the school had moved on and we weren’t able to relocate them we moved to some residential canals to target snook. Chris had some pretty good success landing snook up to 28″ while casting the same Slayer Inc soft plastic and suspending plugs at laid up fish.

Eventually the tide had died and we called it a night some time after 1 am.

Summer time is a great time of year to try fishing at night and can be a great alternative to fishing during the heat of the day.
